Does anyone know how I can make/encourage my evil landlord put some insulation in our house?! It's bloody freezing and we must be wasting loads of energy heating our house!! It's not our house, so obviously we can't do this ourselves....

Warm front

It's an interesting point. Landlords don't pay the bills so have little incentive to make the necessary improvements. However, in certain circumstances there are grants available of up to £2,700 (£4,000 if you have oil central heating) to improve your central heating/ insulation etc.

This non-repayable grant is available to the home owner or a person renting from a private landlord if they meet certain conditions.

For details of the scheme check out the government funded 'Warm Front' website at http://www.warmfront.co.uk

This is for UK residents but the Warm Front website also contains links to similar schemes in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Hope that helps!

quite restricted

unless you're over 60, receiving benefits, or have a young child, the grants aren't available...

no incentives for landlords

i think this is a really important point. what incentive is there for landlords to make their houses greener when it is the tenants that foot the bills?

I'm sure many tenants would take steps to make their homes environmentally friendly if they were the owners.

Pay for it yourself...

If the house doesn't have an insulated loft, it would probably be worth doing it yourself (or paying somone else to do it) - you'd save money in the long run on bills.
