Green jobs in London: finding the one for you

Being a global commercial hub, London has a vast array of opportunities when it comes to securing a job in sustainability, climate change or the environmental sectors.

Green Jobs

With the majority of larger corporations and central government based within the M25, the diversity of what can be classed as a green job can sometimes be not only confusing but also a bit intimidating for those wanting to make a positive environmental impact through their professional lives.

The best way to establish what types of roles are on offer is to break them down into bite-size chunks that can be searched further if they are of interest.

  • Financial

Banks, investment funds, insurers and commodities traders all have arms which impact on the green agenda. Whether it is socially responsible investment (SRI), climate change risk management or the trading of the raw ingredients for biofuels on the markets, almost every financial institution will have a function of their business which is devoted to the environmental sector. Financial institutions are also well know for having strong community investment teams.
  • Renewable Energy

With a large number of renewable energy companies based in London, wind, biofuels, tidal, and solar power are all represented by companies who chose to operate from the capital. From sales & marketing to engineering, these fore-runners for the development of next generation power systems need the most talented and dedicated people to succeed and become mainstream businesses.
  • Corporate

Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility have risen up the agenda over the past five years. Pick any big brand and look at their website – most will have a sustainability or CSR report, and if there is a report there will be a strategy. With corporate reputation sometimes making or breaking a company, sustainability managers can influence organisations to make better choices. The role of sustainability in the modern day corporation is one of great importance.
  • Local Authority

Waste strategy/collection/recycling, public health and sustainable transport all fall under the remit of local authorities who are focused on the delivering of public services in the most sustainable manner possible. Central government legislation defines the strategies that are undertaken on the ground meaning there are an increasing number of green jobs available in this area.
  • Charities

It goes without saying that a good many charitable organisations are based in London. Fundraisers, consultants and marketing professionals are always in demand.

London offers a diverse range of green jobs. The question is – which sector interests you the most?
