There hasn't really been a worthwhile green alternative to date that I have been aware of, it was actually greener to use a decent 'evil' chain lube and keep your bike running for a few years than either having it rust away in the shed or constantly putting on new drive chains. But now there is a decent choice, green oil can stand up to mountain biking in the pennines, it's great stuff.
